THE PS4 SHARE BUTTON AND RECORDED VIDEOS/STREAMING

Video recording and sharing is far from perfect... and SONY has to make some improvements over time to make this useful.

Here's an overview and How-To for the Share Button and video recording and streaming.  And what you can do with them as of the PS4's launch date.

ALSO:  SONY is under great pressure from customers to add YouTube video capture.  Right now TWITCH and Facebook are about the only place to park your videos.  YouTube is a must and YouTube is the king of video sharing.

Social sharing via Twitter, Facebook & Twitch

If you’re into sharing screenshots, gameplay videos, or broadcasting your gameplay live, you’ll like the PS4. By hitting the Share button on the DualShock 4 controller, you can very easily (three button presses) share a screenshot via Twitter or Facebook. If you’re in a game, you have the option of sharing a screenshot, capturing a video, or broadcasting to Twitch or Ustream. It is very, very easy to share your gameplay on the PS4.

Sharing isn’t perfect, though. The screenshots, as you see in this story, are low-res (1024×576) and heavily compressed. If you record video to the PS4′s internal hard drive, image quality is pretty good (full-res I think), but it probably records at 20-25 fps, rather than 60. Live gameplay uploaded to Twitch/Ustream is low-res (probably 480p) and heavily compressed. This is something that Sony could improve on in the future, though — perhaps when it has a better idea of the bandwidth demands presented by millions of concurrent PS4 streamers.

When the console launches on Friday (for $400), that fancy Share button on the DualShock 4 controller is only capable of sharing those recorded videos with Facebook. YouTube, which has a huge gaming audience, isn’t an available option. Sony said it is working to add more sharing options in the future.

Even though the social sharing won’t have a ton of variety, Sony is trying to make it work well for people that want to share videos with Facebook friends.

“You can send your videos to friends, but on Facebook, you can do custom audiences,” Sony Computer Entertainment product planning manager Toshimasa Aoki. “Normally, every video is public, but you can make a Killzone list or family list and share videos that only they will see.”

Those lists are your Facebook groups, so if you already have a list of gamers, you can share your videos with them starting on day one.

The lack of YouTube support and the limited Twitch functionality (videos that players broadcast over Twitch won’t archive on the site) means that the PS4 is more for sharing clips with friends rather than building a massive audience like some broadcasters enjoy.
